With so many new changes to Jamaica's premiere talent show Digicel Rising Stars, the most talked about is the new host. Young, vivacious and a Miss Jamaica World, Yendi Phillipps has received varying reactions from viewers. It is very hard to fill other people's shoes and this was the problem that confronted Yendi Phillipps when she took on the task of hosting the fifth season of Digicel Rising Stars. However, this young beauty has continued to improve week after week winning the hearts of many Jamaican viewers.
It was a packed studio audience last Sunday night (September 7) for Digicel Rising Stars. The night, with patrons all over, sitting on steps and even standing, climaxed in a night filled with high energy as the five remaining contestants, K'Alee, Cameal, Lashana, SLR and Kahlil, provided a chart-topping Billboard themed-night along with a ferocious Live Band.
For the lucky few who make it through to the top-ten of the Digicel Rising Stars talent competition, this is just the beginning of the road until they are declared winners by Jamaica's vote. In previous seasons, Jamaica has seen the unearthing of a kaleidoscope of new talents in the music industry with Cavan, Chris Martin and One Third (Season 1, 2 and 3 winners respectively) and most recently Romain Virgo.
"You don't know what its like to listen to this song ... I am surprised I am still awake". That was the verdict R3 got from Anthony on August 3rd; the comment came in response to R3's rendition of the Bee Gees hit song To Love Somebody. Other Miller comments such as "like your suit, that song is much too big for you" (directed at Wayne Williams), and "you look like figurines about to break" (directed at SLR) have proved to be as entertaining as the performances in the 5th Season of Digicel Rising Stars.
As the new host of Digicel Rising Stars, I am privileged to work with the rising talent of Jamaica. What I love most about being a part of this competition is the chance to bond with the contestants, talking with them and getting to know them a bit more. Digicel Rising Stars Season 5 is turning out to be an interesting competition with the contestants finding themselves and getting more comfortable with the stage.
The performances so far have been relatively good with the top-ten displaying their talent in the top-ten show on Sunday night (Aug 3). In fact, I saw some exceptionally strong performances and some weak ones
Every Digicel Rising Star in this year's competition wants to win the money: $1 million dollars. The chance to release two singles and a music video makes the pot that much sweeter. So how do contestants compete to get the votes?
Now with the competition down to the top 10 finalists, the battle is on. Every week, someone will go home, and for this reason, contestants are forced to literally ‘bring it’ or ‘step’ if they want to take the number one spot: Digicel Rising Star 2008.
On Sunday night, Jamaica finally got to see the top 10 contestants of this year's Digicel Rising Stars competition. The Courtleigh Auditorium was set ablaze as several contestants wooed and thrilled the judges while guest D'Angel and resident selector DJ Flamez made the chill room's temperature rise.
The Sony Ericsson Chill Room debuted on Digicel Rising Stars with a cool new look last Sunday and has received rave reviews. The usually happening pre- and post-performance hang-spot for the Digicel Rising Stars contenders and celebrity guests is now outfitted with a resident DJ, DJ Flames of RJR 94 FM and a great new voter’s prize.
Digicel Rising Stars, Jamaica’s most successful television show bows in for its fifth anniversary season with a new look and more auditions.
