While the first set of performances kept with the Rock theme, their second set included guest appearances from their artistes. Queen Ifrica and Princess Tia gave a royal performance of Lioness on the Rise, a soulful empowering song off Montego Bay, Queen Ifrica’s new album. Continuing the rock theme, Adena, accompanied by Tessanne Chin, tore the roof off the house with Tessanne's Black Book, while Brown Sugar and Etana took us back to our Roots in a crowd pleasing performance that had the audience singing along.
"I must commend all three contestants tonight, because you all chose women and you chose outstanding women." stated judge Clyde McKenzie.
Equally as impressed with the contestants and their choices were this week's Chill Room guests, 2005 Rising Stars Winner, Chris Martin and recording artiste D Major, who kept Kiki in stitches. The band is also to be commended, as they didn’t miss a beat, adding the necessary edge to the performances.
Outstanding Performances
All the contestants this week brought the heat, even Brown Sugar, despite a throat infection which left her barely able to speak. Adena and Princess Tia however reached new heights, setting the bar a bit further out of reach for potential Digicel Rising Stars to come.
Princess Tia's first performance, Evanescence's Wake Me Up, got the audience riled, and ready to go. Adding the right amount of attitude, Tia may just have head banged her way into the Top 2. Though she left the audience in an uproar and both Nadine and Clyde equally as pleased, with Clyde calling her request to be awoken unnecessary, as "It is obvious that you are awake" and Nadine commending her on her stage presence, telling her to continue roaring, and calling her "My little lioness!" Miller couldn't resist raining on her parade: "That Evanescence is a great song, and I would not have known that hearing Princess Tia sing it. I think she really made a hash of it."
Meanwhile, Diva Adena put Kelly Clarkson to shame with her rendition of Clarkson's Since You've Gone. Adena not only rocked the audience, but blew the roof off of the Auditorium as she explored new rungs of her vocal range.
"Adena I was a little bit afraid, because you know you have your comfort zone. You surprised me with that rock song! You Rock!" Nadine nearly sang.
Miller also commended her: "Now we're talking." He continued: "I think when you forget all your issues and the things you've been thinking about and just sing, yeah, because you have the voice to rock this room tonight."
Fashion
The contestants not only rocked the crowd but rocked the colour black, chains and studs in true rocker fashion, with Yendi leading the way in her mile high, studded, black, gladiator platforms. Following her in the category of memorable pieces was Adena's flaming red and black hair, and then Princess Tia's crushed-leather jacket with silver chains. However, Brown Sugar's outfit for her first performance took the show, with her patent leather pumps, black one strap dress with black leggings and a gold belt, funky gold jewellery and medallion and her bleach blonde Mohawk with a red streak. Brown Sugar’s guest artiste, Etana, also schooled the other guest artistes, in her fluffy yellow, black, and white off-shoulder dress with a solid black middle.
Notable Judges Comments
"Come on Brown Sugar, you come out in that hot, raunchy outfit and give us Jail House Rock and Tootie Fruity? You would have to be a granny to like that. I didn’t, it was dull." was Killer Miller's comment after Brown Sugar’s Rock and Roll medley.
Despite her inability to speak, and struggle to sing, the judges still laid it on her for this performance.
"You would really have to try hard to flop" stated Clyde, who then continued "But I don't think you were at the top of your game tonight."
Nadine, agreeing with Clyde, then laid it on the thickest: "It was entertaining Brown Sugar, but I tell you the truth, you should have chosen another song, you are too good a singer for that. You need something right now to challenge yourself and stretch yourself. That felt like something anybody could have done, like cotton candy. You could have done so much better."
Audience Comments
The audience left the auditorium just as excited as the contestants this week, with one member stating: "Bwoy, every week them just get better and better! I'm loving this all female top three, them prove today that them deserve to be here!"
Another, showing concern for the fate of Brown Sugar then joined in: "Yeh, and Brown Sugar more dan deserve to be here, but her voice sick and the judges know that. I don't know why dem did have to do her suh!"
Make sure to tune into TVJ this Friday at 8:30pm to see which two will be the lucky ones to continue to fight for the title of 2009 Digicel Rising Star!
