On Sunday night, Jamaica finally got to see the top 10 contestants of this year's Digicel Rising Stars competition. The Courtleigh Auditorium was set ablaze as several contestants wooed and thrilled the judges while guest D'Angel and resident selector DJ Flamez made the chill room's temperature rise.
Quote of the week
"You don't know what its like to listen to this song ... I am surprised I am still awake". That was the verdict R3 got from Anthony Miller which will go down as this weeks most memorable comment. The comment came in response to R3's rendition of the Bee Gees hit song To Love Somebod. Other Miller comments such as “like your jacket, that song is much too big for you”, and “you look like figurines about to break” proved as entertaining as the performances.
Miller doesn't suffer fools gladly and on Sunday night he was at his best throwing volleys of witty commentary that were at times caustic. The contestants took them in stride however, seemingly aware of the sincerity imbedded in Miller's judgements.
Performance you want to see again
On Sunday night at Digicel Rising Stars Mobay group Khalil brought the house down. Singing the popular Jeffersons theme song Movin' on Up and a remix rendition of Will Smith's Prince of Bel Air. Khalil came to please, and so they did. Decked out in matching grey blazers and hats to compliment the style, Khalil made a fashion statement that matched the dexterity and fluidity of their performance.
The judges were also pleased with the performance as Nadine Sutherland commenting that in her five years judging the competition theirs' was one of the best performances she had ever seen. Anthony Miller also heaped praises on the quintet commenting that they have what it takes to be true Digicel Rising Stars.
Judges hit or miss
For the first half of Sunday night's show the judges gave luke-warm appraisals of the performances. According to Clyde Mckenzie the second performance of the night SLR, "Made a mark". Nadine thought Nigel Wilson's R Kelly medley was off key and R3's cover of Bee Gees To Love Somebody made matters worse for Anthony Miller who was surprised he was "still awake". Nadine thought she had seen better of Leisha Rose whose singing of Lauryn Hill's cover of Can't Take My Eyes Off You was somewhat out of sorts, Rose admitted after the show that she was very ill, and attributed her performance to that. The judges were on point and for the most part mirrored the sentiments of the capacity audience.
Yendi's Moment
Exciting fashion was present at Sunday's show and Yendi set the pace when she graced the stage in a short indigo layered dress with yellow stilettos and matching pearls. Yendi is definitely growing into her role as the new host of Digicel Rising Stars. Throughout the night’s show she maintained the vibe with the audience even during the breaks, and seemed to be a calming force for the nervous contestants.
Fashion statement of the week
SLR made the bold fashion statement the week, the trio preformed Tattoo by Jordin Sparks but the attention was on their matching handkerchief styled dresses. The colourful spectacle was amazing and received a resounding “Ooo” from audience members
